How Can We Navigate Discouragement in Everyday Life? – with contributions from R T Kendall & others
‘A riveting, comforting, and much-needed book, especially in this day when so many are struggling.’
Debby Wright, national director, Vineyard Churches UK & Ireland
It looked like Howard Satterthwaite was going places. Having practised as a barrister, he was now leading the historic church, Westminster Chapel, and set for a bright future in ministry. But by March 2023, emotionally and physically exhausted, he found himself in the stranglehold of despair and resigning his Lead Pastor role. The cause? Discouragement. But by the grace of God he didn’t give up, and neither should you.
Hold on to Hope is the powerful and vulnerable account of how Howard found a way through the debilitating challenges of ministry, and the quiet battles many Christians face behind closed doors. Determined not to let despair have the last word, he set out to learn from those who had walked the path before him and come through the other side. Many of these conversations with well-known Christian leaders are included in the book, with key contributions from the likes of R T Kendall, Katia Adams, and Paul and Becky Harcourt.
Howard also drew on the wisdom and insights of persecuted Christians. Perhaps more than anyone else, they have to sink deep wells of hope and encouragement, and the perspective their faith experience brings is as humbling as it is enriching.
Speaking about why he wrote the book, Howard says, ‘I know first-hand what it’s like to feel like you’re drowning, and I’m painfully aware there are many others who are silently fighting similar battles. I want people to know they are not alone, and that there is hope.’
As part of his desire to make a difference and encourage those in the most discouraging situations, Howard has committed all author profits to two hope-giving charities – Kintsugi Hope and Open Doors UK & Ireland.
‘Supporting these charities felt like a natural extension of the heart behind this book. Both do incredible work offering encouragement, support, and practical help to those in real need.’
The result is a beautifully woven collection of scriptural reflections and transparent conversations with fellow believers who have all faced the same silent struggle with discouragement, and who can all testify to the sustaining grace of God. Written with honesty, gentleness, and a high value for pastoral care, Hold on to Hope invites us to find renewed courage in the promises of God and the testimony of His people.

Whether you’re a leader in ministry or a Christian who simply feels weary, this is an important and timely reminder that you are not alone – and that even in your darkest hours, God is always at work.
‘Full of truths that make you pause and ask honest questions. It is written with humility and faith that gives the reader hope even when things seem difficult. I recommend it highly.’
